MORE MGO MOJO

The MGO (methylglyoxal) rating is a bit like measuring Manuka honey’s horsepower. You know you’re getting the good stuff with The True Honey Co. because we only sell rated honey from MGO 300+.

UNTAMED FLAVOURS

This raw natural bounty comes from deep within wild, remote bush country – tough, rugged, and a challenge just to get there. The taste is a little untamed too – rich, resinous, bittersweet – to complement your culinary explorations.

A SPOONFUL OF HONEY

There are so many ways to have Manuka honey – stirred into a soothing hot drink, drizzled on porridge or to give complexity to your special recipes.

WHAT IT SAYS ON THE JAR

We’ve cut out the middle man and only sell our very own honey direct to you from this very website. So you can be sure that you’re getting a premium quality, Manuka honey, at a fair price.

the MGO rating

What does the MGO rating on each jar mean, and why do we use this system?

All honeys are not created equal

Most honeys contain a naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide (HPA). But Manuka honey’s contains something else.   That ‘something else’ is methylglyoxal (MGO), a sugar molecule found in most honeys in small quantities. But in Manuka honey, MGO can be up to 100x higher.

The science behind MGO

In 1981, Dr Peter Molan MBE, a University of Waikato professor, discovered that when he destroyed honey’s HPA.....Like to know more? Google Dr. Peter Molon and his studies.

UMF, MGO, OMG!

Still with us after the science lesson? Good. Some honey makers use UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) to measure their honey. We use the MGO rating number because this directly relates to the amount of MGO in your Manuka honey.

So when it comes to the science behind Manuka honey, we don’t have all the answers yet. But as you can see, some very clever scientists are still discovering (and proving) amazing things about our favourite food. We promise to always share the truth of what we know, and what we do, with you.
